A team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has unveiled a pioneering advancement in robotics: PIBOT, the world's first humanoid robot capable of piloting an aircraft. In contrast to earlier systems of automated piloting, PIBOT not only manages cockpit switches but, through advanced artificial intelligence technology, is also proficient in analyzing and memorizing flight maps and emergency protocols.
While previous systems like DARPA's ALIAS or RE2 Robotics' CARNAC also made strides toward autonomous piloting, PIBOT introduces a wholly new dimension. Its humanoid design enables intuitive integration into existing aircraft cockpits without necessitating modifications, thus presenting numerous practical applications.
The integration of ChatGPT technology into PIBOT facilitates the storage of global aeronautical maps and emergency procedures in a manner that would be intricate for human pilots. Consequently, the robot is equipped to respond to diverse situations with precision and efficiency, often surpassing human capabilities. Equipped with cameras, PIBOT can analyze both cockpit interiors and the external environment, enhancing the precision of its actions.
While PIBOT has predominantly undergone testing on simulators to date, researchers are highly optimistic about its potential application under real flight conditions. The envisioned future for this robot is extensive, spanning from piloting aircraft to autonomously driving cars, and even supporting military operations.
David Hunchul Shim, the leader of the PIBOT project, underscores that humanoid-shaped robots offer a sound solution for automated piloting, as they obviate the need for investment in modifying existing aircraft. He also believes in their potential within other industry sectors, such as ground transportation.
The conclusion of the PIBOT project is slated for 2026, followed by its commercialization, which has the potential to revolutionize multiple industry sectors, rendering flights more efficient, secure, and adaptable.
