Starlink, a project owned by SpaceX, has achieved another milestone in the development of global communication by successfully testing the new Direct to Cell service. This innovative project aims to enable smartphone users worldwide to access the Internet through satellite connections.
In January 2024, SpaceX announced the launch of the first batch of 21 new Starlink satellites designed to provide the Direct to Cell service. This technology will allow smartphone users to access 4G Internet without the need for additional antenna installations.
In the initial phase, the service will be limited to sending SMS messages, with plans to expand to voice calls and data transmission in 2025. Starlink satellites, equipped with an advanced eNodeB modem, function as space-based cell towers, enabling network integration similar to a standard roaming partner.
Tests of this technology will be conducted in collaboration with T-Mobile in the United States, and the service will be available in many countries in the future. Starlink Direct to Cell has the potential to change the way we use mobile communication, especially in remote and hard-to-reach regions of the world.
